Lei Yuan Bin
︎BIOGRAPHY
Lei Yuan Bin is a founding member of the film collective 13 Little Pictures and was conferred the Young Artist Award in 2012 by the National Arts Council.
His directorial debut fiction WHITE DAYS (2009) was In Competition at the Hong Kong IFF – HKIFF 2009 and won the Audience Award (2nd Prize) at the Asian Hot Shots Berlin Film Festival 2010. His debut documentary 03-FLATS (2014) was In Competition at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) 2014, won Best ASEAN Documentary at the Salaya International Documentary Film Festival 2015 and screened as part of the Venice Biennale Architettura 2016. In 2015, Yuan Bin co-directed FUNDAMENTALLY HAPPY, featuring Christopher Doyle as cinematographer. The fiction feature world-premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival – PÖFF 2015 and was In Competition at the Hanoi IFF – HANIFF 2016 and Salamindanaw Asian Film Festival 2016. His short film A DANCE FOR REN HANG was In Competition at BIFF 2018. His feature I DREAM OF SINGAPORE (2019) had its international premiere at the Berlinale Panorama 2020 and was nominated for the White Goose Award (Grand Prize) in the DMZ International Documentary Festival 2020. His documentary feature BABY QUEEN competed at BIFF 2022.
In addition to shooting and editing his own films, Lei was also the director of photography for Tan Bee Thiam’s TIONG BAHRU SOCIAL CLUB (2020), Daniel Hui’s DEMONS (2018), Liao Jiekai’s RED DRAGONFLIES (2010) and AS YOU WERE (2014), Anthony Chen’s HAZE (2008), and the art director for Boo Junfeng’s SANDCASTLE (2010).
A Berlinale Talents 2016 alumnus, Lei was mentored by film maestro Hou Hsiao-Hsien at the Busan Asian Film Academy 2008.
