Tan Bee Thiam directs, produces, writes and edits. He directed the short film KOPI JULIA (Sharjah Biennale 2013). He co-directed FUNDAMENTALLY HAPPY (Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2015), a film adaptation of the award-winning play and was shot by Christopher Doyle. His debut solo feature TIONG BAHRU SOCIAL CLUB was the Opening Film of the Singapore International Film Festival 2020 and won the Roger & Julie Corman award at the 19th Fargo Fantastic Film Festival at Valleycon, the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature at the 11th Guam International Film Festival, the Special Jury Prize at the 38th Los Angeles Asia-Pacific Film Festival and the Best Film (Newcomers Section) at the 19th Asian Film Festival (Rome). Film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum selected TIONG BAHRU SOCIAL CLUB in his Top 10 films of 2021 for Sight and Sound Magazine. In the same year, FUNDAMENTALLY HAPPY and KOPI JULIA were featured in MUBI’s Singapore New Wave Auteur showcase. An alumnus of Berlinale Talents, Rotterdam Lab, and European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE), he also produced Daniel Hui's DEMONS (Berlinale Forum 2019) and Lei Yuan Bin's 03-FLATS (Venice Biennale Architettura 2016).
